Ways to Make Learning Fun and Exciting for Students

Mary Angela Martin's EDM510 Blog

Hey guys and welcome to my Blog page.

This blog is intended for a practice exercise for EDM510.

I have always tried to figure out a new way to make learning fun and exciting. I want to try and avoid those students who hate/dread getting dressed every morning to come to school. As a future teacher, I want every student to try and find the joy in school like I once had. I love teaching young students from 1st to 3rd grade and would love to figure out what excites them.

My question for you is, what are some ways that, we as teachers, can make learning fun and exciting? What are ways that we can try and get students to want to engage/learn when they step foot in the classroom?

  1. Mary,

I am not a teacher yet, but as a substitute I always hear students say that they HATE school! It's really sad to hear students say this. To make learning more exciting, I think it is important that teachers incorporate a lot of hands on activities. Hands on activities keep students engaged, and it allows them to interact with each other. Elementary school students also have a lot of energy, which is something they can't help. They hate sitting still doing worksheets and busy work. I know that there are some times where I will have to give students worksheets, but I will try to give my students hands on activities as much as I can. Also, incorporating technology is another way to keep students engaged. I would like to hear from others that are teachers that have actually had experience with this.

    1. I completely agree and think that students need to be more active in their learning. I believe that after sitting around all day they become tired and their brain is tired, but if you get them moving and make things exciting then they will have plenty of energy. I remember going to school every day and hoping we would do a fun project or get to work in groups. I think it is important to all mix up what you are doing and do not always teach the same way.

  2. I am not a teacher yet, but I remember all the fun activities we did when I was younger and that's what made me excited about school. I hope to not just teach my students but give them opportunities to do activities along with the lesson. I think if you are doing fun things with them everyday they will be more excited about learning. Also, making a point to observe every student and teaching them in the ways that best suites them. This can be a hard task but I think we have to cater to each students' learning needs and that will help them to be more excited about learning because they will be able to excel more easily.

    1. Chelsea,
I think that is a great idea and it is always important to get to know your students. I think that sometimes students get bored when teacher do the same thing over and over again if they do not learn that way. All students are different and the best way to entertain them is to find out what their interests are and what they enjoy doing.

  3. My biggest motivator is attitude. If my students see that I'm happy, then they are happy (most of the time). Even when I don't like a certain subject, I make them think I do, so that they are more excited about it. I also think each child needs to feel loved and connected in order to engage more of themselves. Learning should be fun and hands-on. The more hands-on we make it, the more learning will take place!

    1. Melanie,

Yes that is a great point and students can always tell if you are tired or having a bad day. I think that you should never bring your problems to the classroom because the students can always feel your energy. I love this comment and think you are exactly right.
